Majors and Careers

What is your major? What do you want to do with your major? What do you like? What are you good at? These are questions you have likely been asked throughout high school and since you have arrived at App State. For many, these questions can be stressful. First of all, it is OK not to know but we want to help you take steps towards making decisions about your major and future career path(s). Our team will guide you through a creative process of self-discovery about your interests, skills, values and personality. Through career coaching, self-assessment inventories, and major and career research, you will learn how you fit in a variety of career and life settings.

Research careers

A great first step is to explore the types of careers a major can lead to and the skills one needs to be successful in these fields. Discover the types of internships and employers are related to each major. Then, set up a time to meet with a career coach or come to our Career Studio to take one of our career assessments and go over your options. Career coaches/guides can help you research information including related career titles, daily work tasks, relevant skills, job outlook, salary, trends, training, etc. There are many resources you can utilize to research majors, careers and employers.

  • Research careers through the Occupational Outlook Handbook or O*NET OnLine.
  • Explore careers by job shadowing or conducting informational interviews with professionals in fields of interest.
  • Utilize Buzzfile to research employers by major, geographic location and industry.
  • Research industries and jobs in Handshake.
  • Discover academic majors, statistics and alumni profiles.
  • Explore employment rates and wage information of North Carolina students through NC Tower.
  • Gain experience and discover interests and skills through volunteering, interning, campus involvement and part-time jobs.
