BOONE, N.C. — The State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) Public Fellows Internship Program, funded by the SECU Foundation, afforded nine Appalachian State University students the opportunity to complete unpaid internships over the spring. The program is designed to help students develop their professional skills as they work with leaders of community-based businesses, nonprofits or government agencies, and students receive funding to support themselves during the internship.
In the Career Development Center, we love to hear about the career success that our students and alumni experience as a result of their engagement with our center. Today, we are excited to share Danielle Iannelli's inspirational story.
Danielle, a 2013 Communication Studies graduate, is now a Senior Manager for Immersive Learning Programs at PBS. As a transfer student, she sought out mentors and community connections that helped her find her footing in her early days at Appalachian. The support she received from the Career Development Center prepared her to succeed in obtaining a scholarship to participate in the AppState in DC internship program. According to Danielle, Appalachian truly became her family and without it she would not be where she is today.
Dominick Fetters excelled as a student employee in the Career Development Center for 1.5 years. In 2020, he earned his BS in Applied Physics and now just recently graduated with his MS in Engineering Physics in May. Dom applied all the strategies for job search and salary negotiation when applying for full time employment. In May 2021, Dom started his first professional job as a RF Test Engineer with Wolfspeed - a Cree company based in the RTP that manufactures wide bandgap semiconductors.
This year, we received several nominations for our inaugural Supervisor of the Year award. After careful consideration, we recognize Jennifer Coffey, Program Director of Student Veteran Services, as our 2021 Supervisor of the Year!
Jennifer has supervised students employees for the past 10 years; from her previous role as Assistant Director of Financial Aid and School Certifying Official for Veterans to her current role in Student Veteran Services. Judy Haas, Dean of Students says "Jennifer has created a space for our student veterans to gather, learn and grow. As a supervisor, she has created a place for her student veteran employees to engage in meaningful work in an encouraging work environment."
We have some amazing staff members in our office who have recently been recognized by the University and professional organizations. Thank you for your tireless efforts to improve the services and care we offer students, faculty, staff and so many others! We are so very proud of your achievements! The Career Development Center is excited to kick off the spring 2021 semester with a brand new series called Career.Connect. After undergoing a semester of completely virtual events, it was evident that both students and organizations alike were hungry for a more customized and personal experience to explore career opportunities and connect with each other.
