SECU Public Fellows Internship Program

About the Program

Appalachian State University is excited to announce a great opportunity for students who will be
completing unpaid internships in public service organizations for academic credit in Spring 2024 and
Summer 2024. Through the generosity of the North Carolina State Employees Credit Union Foundation,
the University is a site for the State Employees Credit Union (SECU) Public Fellows Internship Program
and is able offer 20, $5,000 scholarships* for tuition, fees and other internship expenses.

The purpose of the Public Service Fellows Internship Program is to connect undergraduates with
organizations located in rural regions of NC. Students selected for the program will gain meaningful onthe-
job experience and learn about career opportunities in public service. Internship sites will be in rural
counties in North Carolina, as defined by the 2020 US Census, with priority given to Watauga, Ashe, and
Avery counties and the northwest region of North Carolina.

 


 

The SECU Public Fellows Internship availability as follows:

  • For Spring 2024 -- Social Work majors ONLY
  • For Summer 2024 - Majors in the Departments of Government/Justice Studies and Public Health ONLY
  • If I am a Social Work major, can I apply for the scholarship for Summer 2024? No.

 

Eligibility

Students must be -

Degree-seeking undergraduates in the departments of Social Work, Government and Justice Studies,
and Public Health. Students who participate in the ACCESS program are afforded priority applicant
status.

NC resident for tuition purposes.

Earning academic credit for the internship.

Interning for a minimum of 300 contact hours at the internship site.

Interning at a site that is in NC and in a rural county as defined by the 2020 Census
(https://www.ncruralcenter.org/about-us/).

Have a minimum 2.5 GPA.
