Become a Career Guide!

The Career Development Center at Appalachian State University serves all students and alumni pursuing various future professional endeavors. Our services include resume reviews, career counseling, job and internship search assistance, and other tools to achieve life and professional success.

What do Career Guides do?

  • Provide feedback and resources to peers seeking help building or improving their resumes, cover letters, and other job searching skills during Career Studio walk-in hours
  • Provide electronic feedback to career related questions and submissions of resumes and cover letters
  • Communicate and listen to peers as they share their experiences, skills, and career goals
  • Maintain knowledge of all career resources in the Career Development Center and make referrals as necessary
  • Assist with Career Studio Week, Internship and Jobs Fair, Education Fair and other events
  • Actively participate during team meetings and trainings
  • Additional projects as time allows

What will you get out of being a Career Guide?

  • Compensation of $8.00 per hour
  • Thorough training and development of resume and cover letter writing skills, and other job searching skills
  • Develop professional skills, including interpersonal skills, decision making and analytical skills, and a personal work ethic
  • Develop personal communication, problem solving, and leadership skills
  • Gain hands-on helping experience in a team environment outside of the classroom
  • Build your resume and gain professional references for your field/graduate school
  • Help with your own career planning skills

What are the requirements?

  • Rising junior, senior or graduate student with satisfactory academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0 at the time of application/throughout the position
  • Attend a training retreat the week before fall classes begin
  • Commitment to one academic year
  • Must have availability for up to 6 hours per week between the hours of 12:00-4:00, Monday through Thursday
  • Must be available for a weekly 1-hour staff meeting on Fridays
  • Proven listening and communication skills
  • Ability to develop rapport with peers in an open and supportive environment
  • Ability to interact respectfully with all people
  • Ability to take initiative and high level of reliability, mature
  • Ability to learn quickly
  • Work well in a team environment as well as independently
  • Professional appearance and demeanor
