International Success From The Career Development Center

Julie Do is an international student from Evian, France who came to Appalachian State as part of her MBA program in Human Resources. She came to Boone this past January and only two months after her arrival, was recruited by Google for a summer position in their Talent Acquisition department.

Three weeks before her interview, Julie looked for ways to prepare. When she mentioned feeling uncertain about where to begin, a friend referred her to the Career Development Center, where she was put in touch with Angelina Donohue, a Graduate Assistant. She underwent a resume review, used the interview rooms twice, and experienced a mock interview.

The day she dropped in, she had no idea the Career Development Center existed or what to expect from her visit, but would have used the services at the start of her time in Appalachian if she had known about them.

Julie conducted her mock interview with Angelina in one of the interview rooms.

“I thought I would go in there and feel kind of silly,” she admitted , but a few minutes into the mock interview found herself starting to ease into the headspace. Afterward, she felt much more prepared for her actual interview, saying that having a way of knowing how these things worked in an unfamiliar place was extremely helpful.

Julie talked about what it is like being an international student, and how it can be difficult to get your foot in the door for career prospects after only being here for such a short time.

Her University in Evian does not have a Career Development Center or services like Resume Clinics and mock interviews, but Julie noted that being already ingrained in her own community back home, she probably would not need or use them. She was grateful to be able to use the CDC as an international student, stressing that other students like her would definitely benefit from these services.

After undergoing the resume review and submitting her newly workshopped resume, Julie received the news that she got the position at Google this past April.

The resume clinics helped Julie because she wasn’t used to how resumes are done in America, mentioning some differences, such as resumes containing photos of applicants in France.

Being an international student, she said, the resources available for students in Career Development helped her feel more connected.

Julie also mentioned her experience having professional headshots taken at her residence hall and assistance with creating a LinkedIn profile.

Julie will begin work in Austin, Texas this summer, and after three months, will return to France to finish out her program and complete her thesis. She feels bittersweet about leaving Boone so soon but excited to begin this next chapter of her life.
