Advice From A Fellow Mountaineer

Amber is a recent AppState graduate. She was an out-of-state student who came to Appalachian because of it’s amazing biodiversity. Hear what she has to say about the Career Development Center:

“My first experience with Career Development was actually because I work close to them and established a friendly acquaintanceship with several of the career counsellors I would pass in the halls. When it came time for me to spruce up my resume for a class assignment, I sought out an appointment with my college's respective counselor. We spent a solid amount of time going over what was wrong with it and how I could make it better including formatting and content and she showed me what resources I could use in my future job search.

My first impression of the staff and counselors was helpful and friendly! They are happy to be here to help you market yourself better so you can achieve your goals. Their advice and encouragement has proven valuable and instrumental in my success.

Because of their help I was able to find the sites jobs were listed on, submit a comprehensive and professional resume, and navigate the hiring process. I will be starting my position as a Field Technician with SynTerra Corporation, an environmental consulting agency, on July 10.”

When asked for some advice for her fellow Mountaineers, Amber had this to say:

“You're going to work harder than you want to, for longer than you can stand. There will be walls that you have to strain to scale. But in the end, after what sometimes takes literal blood, sweat, and tears, it will fall together. You are the only person responsible for your success. The one quote that has rung true throughout my arduous journey that I want to leave you with is "Luck is what happens when preparedness meets opportunity."

Congratulations, Amber! We wish you all the best in your new job!
