Starting Your Resume

Posted by Blog Contributors

As a career counselor, I meet with a lot of students who have no idea where to even start when drafting their resume. If you haven’t checked out our website, then do so! We have a lot of resume samples posted there, that can help you get started. Click under Students/Alumni, and then select the link for resumes and cover letters.

Begin thinking about your experiences and start listing them out. This will be the most "in-depth" area of your resume.  Experience doesn’t necessarily have to be just “work” (paid experiences). Think of your involvement in clubs and organizations, and volunteer work as well. If you aren’t sure what items to cut and what to leave, that’s ok for now.  With each experience, list a few bullets about the duties and accomplishments related to each item.  You may find it helpful to set up an appointment with your career counselor to discuss your resume in depth. Once you have a draft started, we can sit down with you and help with the logistics.

Remember that it is never too early to start your resume! It is a lot easier to add to an existing document then it is to wait until you are a Senior and then try to go back and remember everything you’ve ever done. So don’t wait, check out our website, get going, and contact our office if you need help – (828) 262-2180.
