The Career Development Center typically works with a good number of students who are applying to graduate school, both upcoming graduates and alumni. The process for graduate school admissions can be tough – each school has separate application procedures; with some requiring different materials/forms than others, etc. The process can be intimidating, but we can help if you are unsure of where to start.

It’s the end of October, so if you are applying for admission in Fall 2010, then you need to get moving! A lot of schools have deadlines in December and January, so go ahead and get the process started. Below is a timeline that might be helpful to you, and can help you to get on the ball!

Things to do now:

• If you haven't done so already, take the necessary standardized tests for admissions (GRE, MCAT, LSAT, GMAT). Check the specific requirements of the schools you are interested in to see which test you should take. Contact the Testing Center (2nd floor of the JET building) for on-campus testing schedules and more information.
• Gather graduate program brochures and do research online about schools that interest you, and then work to narrow your choices. Make sure that you apply to several schools. You need to have options, don’t just plan on applying to your top choice! If you don’t get admitted, then you have no plan to fall back on.
• You may want to get a file folder or binder to organize each school’s information. Since application requirements can be different for each, having everything organized in one location can help you to make sure that you follow the application instructions to the tee.
• Begin thinking about who you will ask to write your letters of recommendation. Good choices are typically: faculty members who know you well, club/organization advisors, internship/job supervisors, etc.
• Begin writing a draft of your statement of purpose/essay. Be sure to note if any of the schools have specific questions that they want you to answer within the essay.
• Once you have a draft ready, your career counselor can proofread the essay for you. Contact our office for an appointment. You may also want to visit the University Writing Center for their assistance as well.
• Ask your faculty/supervisors if they will be willing to write letters of recommendation for you. It is a good idea to provide them with additional information if possible - a copy of your resume, and your statement of purpose, as well as the forms for each individual program that you are applying for.

December/January

• Request your official transcripts be sent to the schools you are applying to. Ask that the Registrar hold your transcript until the Fall semester grades are in.
• Make sure that you have all the application deadlines down so that you don’t miss any!
• Complete the application forms for each program. Scan the form into your computer for a neat and clean application form. Reread your essays and statement of purpose and make sure that they are ready to go. Spell check!
• Mail or submit your applications online based on the preferences of each school.
• Relax and breathe! You are finished with Step One.
• Most schools send a postcard upon receipt of each application. Keep track of these. If you don't receive a postcard or letter, contact the Graduate Admissions Office by email or phone to ensure that your application has been received before the deadline.

February

• Start planning for admissions interviews if those are a part of the admissions process for your programs. Each school is different, so some may not require an interview. If you have interviews, make sure that you prepare answers to common questions. Also, come up with a list of the questions that you will ask!

March/April

• Visit the schools to which you've been accepted.
• Discuss acceptances and rejections with a faculty member or the career/graduate admissions counselor at your school and then make your decision!
• Notify the program of your acceptance AND also the programs that you are declining.
